Making a marquise setting

Making the marquise setting was very hard! It took me a third attempt to get it right. I think I found drawing the template and carving/filing the correct amount difficult because it wasn’t clear in my mind how it should look. I would always end up getting rid of too much metal, so it became too thin in areas like the claws. I think I should practice doing this again in the future, but overall i’m happy with the finished product!

Notes:

  • File a flat end on the brass
  • Leave a 1mm allowance at the end of the rod
  • Use a scriber and dividers to create the correct template on the brass bar
  • The claws for the marquise must be 1mm and the space between them (where the stone goes) must be 8mm
  • Once the template has been drawn, the relevant areas can be cut/filed away
  • Essentially, the setting is being carved out of the metal- there are other ways in which to make a marquise setting, this is just one example
