In this process, I generated various models and samples to develop and explore my favourite design ideas. I cut out, formed and textured metal. I decided that, overall, my favourite design idea was to use connected domes, which are inspired by Cambodian rice field hats. I thought a smooth surface might be too plain, so I then started experimenting with the domes surface texture.
I textured the metal initially using hammering techniques, however felt the texture wouldn’t be prominent once cast. I then decided to use milliput because it can create better depth and detail. I also looked at using beaded wire because lots of Cambodian jewellery has intricate detailing on it. When I soldered beaded wire to the outside of the domes, I liked the overall effect on one unit, but didn’t like how busy it became when the units were joined together. I wanted the units to be joined together organically and show off the heat sensitive material, so decided to keep the surfaces smooth and contemporary. Sometimes I think this looks best!
I’m glad I experimented with these ideas because I can always apply them to a future collection or if I wanted to expand this current earring collection!
At this stage, I considered my options for the heat sensitive material.. Either a cabochon or a bead made most sense to sit inside the dome, in a green colour to compliment my earrings once gold plated.
